The role

This a full-time, permanent senior position in our “Contamination and Waste” sub-team. This is one of three key sub-teams at 4Pillars:

  1. EnviroNow sub-team – environmental monitoring (i.e. surface water, groundwater, gas and air quality), regulatory reporting, client liaison, development of management plans, impact assessment.
  2. Contamination and Waste sub-team – contaminated site assessment and management, groundwater, waste classification and analytical innovation.
  3. Environmental Approvals and Management sub-team – Impact assessment, management plans, noise assessment, air quality assessment, modelling, planning and development.

You will work in and manage / supervise this small team (made up of varying skill levels) and you will report directly to the Director of 4Pillars.

Your day-to-day role will involve providing a broad range of environmental services to our clients. See the “Job tasks and responsibilities” below for further detail.

Job tasks and responsibilities

Your role will be focused on:

  • designing and completing land, water, groundwater and soil assessments and investigations.
  • managing delivery of long-term environmental service agreements.
  • building and maintaining strong working relationships with clients.
  • Designing and completing waste classification assessments under relevant NSW legislation.
  • development and implementation of Environmental Management Plans.
  • liaising with government agencies (primarily NSW EPA and Councils) to achieve balanced outcomes.
  • scoping projects and assisting with the preparation of service agreements.


Skills and experience

You will need tertiary qualifications in the field of Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or similar. In addition, you will have 5+ years of post-qualification work experience.

Suitable candidates will have:

  • Extensive knowledge of the NSW contaminated land management frameworks, including the CLM Act, Resilience and Hazards SEPP (encompassing former SEPP 55), the NEPM and the WA DOH Asbestos Management Guidelines.
  • Experience designing and implementing contaminated site assessments (soil and groundwater) and waste classifications.
  • Extensive knowledge of the NSW Waste Management and Classification framework (specifically the NSW Waste Classification Guidelines and the POEO Act/POEO Waste Regulation.
  • Experience dealing with asbestos in relation to contaminated land (i.e. soil contamination with asbestos).
  • sound project management skills.
  • excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • excellent report writing and communication skills.
  • strong commercial acumen and professionalism.
  • proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel etc) and ability to quickly learn and use software for time recording, basic project management etc.
  • the ability to work autonomously/unsupervised.
  • an innovative and solutions-focused approach.
  • a strong sense of integrity, a passion for the environment and customer service.

The following will also be highly regarded:

  • Experience in the consulting sector.
  • Certifications (CENVP, CENVP-SC specialisation, Licenced Asbestos Assessor, etc.).
  • proficiency in CAD and GIS software (i.e. LibreCAD/QCAD/SketchUp and QGIS).


Remuneration guide

The salary guide for this position is $90,000 plus superannuation, commensurate with experience.
